Jelly Roll Mat - Oct 12, 2024 10:00 am
October 5 Come learn to make a jelly-roll placemat. This class will teach you the technique to make the placemats which is the same technique to make a large jelly-roll rug. The placemats (and rugs) are machine washable and can be dried by laying them flat. These make beautiful gifts for homes, offices, etc. Class fee is $25 Fabric Requirements: Set of 4 placemats – 40 strip jelly roll or 40 2.5”x40-42” strips Single placemat – 10 2.5” x 40-42” strips Small pet mat – 10 2.5” x 40-42” strips Large pet mat – 15 2.5”x40-42” strips Batting Requirements Set of 4 placemats - 2.25”x50 yard Bosal Cotton Batting on a roll Or cut your own 2.25x47yards worth of batting (do not need to sew together) Single placemat or small pet mat – 2.25” x 12 yards of batting Large pet mat 2.25” x 17.5yards of batting *You can also do 2.5” wide batting, the 2.25” width is a little easier to start with *The total length should approximately match the total length of your fabric strips. It can be slightly lower as you lose some fabric length when you join the strips Other Materials Needed: Sewing machine that can do a zig zag stitch (clean out any excess lint/debris so it does not impact your sewing) Denim Needle or Topstitch Needle – we will be sewing through up to six layers, so a heavy duty needle is helpful. I prefer denim, but I know many folks that prefer topstitch, microtext, or the Janome purple tips) Clips (not required, but can be helpful when learning) Small iron Thread – if you want to color match to your different fabrics, bring matching thread and be sure to have multiple bobbins so you can color match your bobbins as well. It is also ok to use one thread throughout, it may just show up more on some fabrics than others. Optional Supplies: Walking foot – not necessary, but it will be sewing through 6 layers once you are assembling the placemat, so it can help pull things through RJ Designs – Jelly-Roll Rug PDF Pattern https://rj-designs.net/products/jelly-roll-rug-pattern-pdf-updated?fbclid=IwY2xjawEhmmJleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTk-SJeP4cE-O_g6pbRx0xuv1xpiwXt0xEPk-0mCS43JdH29hksCsFh8Vg_aem_5mSY7pZFkvGnDkfa9fchcg (if you want a downloadable pattern that you can keep - this pattern is for a full-sized rug)
